Stand Up, Stand Out: How to Become an Advocate for Change in the Workplace

Room 2020

It is imperative that women and people of color develop a habit of questioning the institutions that we have been conditioned to accept as the ultimate sources of truth and power. As millennials, especially in today’s socio-political climate, we must be aware of the world around us and where we stand in relation to it. We must have an impulse to speak up and speak out; to stand up and stand out. We must begin to assert our presences in the workplace, and hold our organizations accountable for the impact they have on our lives and the lives of others. Most importantly, we must give back and create opportunity and space to help others grow alongside us if we truly desire to create a more equal balance of power. This talk will take its listeners through the experience of transitioning out of college into the non-diverse tech industry as a young African-American woman. It will share personal experiences of dealing with unconscious bias and feelings of failure, and it will outline the steps you need to take in order to overcome them.
